Animals, Actually

Welcome to Animals, Actually – a fun blog on all creatures great and small.

I write about topical issues, kids and pets, animal experiences during my travels around the world, silliness and travelling adventures of Cruz the Anatolian Shepherd, pet product reviews (‘Cruz Reviews’) and sometimes what goes on behind-the-scenes of articles and PR projects!

Who is Cruz?

Who is CruzCruz is our Anatolian Shepherd Dog, which originates from Turkey. They are sometimes called Aslan Kopek (Lion Dogs) and Kurt Kopek (Wolf Dog).

Cruz is naturally watchful and very agile for his large size. He has remarkable eye-sight, an acute sense of smell and very good hearing. Open a crackling packet of warm roast chicken and he’s suddenly beside you out of nowhere! He also loves his sleep - in many creative and farfetched positions!

Cruz is cruisy (which is how he got his name) – isn’t bothered by anything, really. He can be very stubborn, refusing to move if he doesn’t feel like it, and willing to fight to his death to avoid taking a pill. He also sheds enough to make another dog!

But putting all excess fur aside, he is a playful, friendly and incredibly affectionate family dog whose love and patience are endless!

Walking safely at night

I spoil my dog but he loves it and I do, too

I recently completed a test to find out how much I spoil my dog. The result was that I ‘spoil my dog, but he loves it and I do, too’. Yep, and I proved that when road-testing the Furbo Dog

Should homeless people have pets?

Question: If a person does not have enough money or permanent shelter for themselves, should they keep a pet? How can they care for an animal if they can’t even guarantee their own next meal or roof over their head?…

An encounter with a whale shark – a dream come true!

The truth is, I have bathophobia – a fear …

The de-stenching test

When I look at this photo of Cruz, I still sigh with a little chuckle.

I wasn’t happy about bathing him that day and Cruz clearly wasn’t enjoying the experience either. Not because he doesn’t like getting wet.  Normally, when …

Let’s talk about dog poo!

Dog poo is not my favourite subject but it’s an important one because we have to clean up after our dog every day.

On the weekend, I road-tested what is claimed to be “the most efficient ecological pooper scooper on …
